Did you take part in Serve the City? Here's a recap of a great weekend at Bethany Church.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Mark 10:45
On May 6, 2018, Bethany Church celebrated “Serve the City” as a way to get outside the walls of our church and to follow in Jesus’ example of service.
The morning started with our combined service, which gave us the opportunity to Connect and Grow in new ways, especially a time of prayer within the service. What a beautiful picture of unity in the body of Christ.
Then our service projects provided simple ways for us to GO into our community and be a light. We are so pleased that over 175 people took part in projects including a Habitat for Humanity building project; serving, sorting, knitting and cleaning projects at the Long Beach Rescue Mission; baking and dinner service at the Ronald McDonald House; and two different prayer teams. In addition, many of our families shared one of the 48 care baskets with seniors in their neighborhoods and some deacons were able to give communion to a few of our dear home-bound saints.
We hope you enjoy the video above as well as these comments from just a few of the many people who served our city on May 6.
Care Baskets for Seniors
“My daughter took our basket to a neighbor who only gets out about once a week. She was so happy and it was good to see and visit with her. Thank you for supplying these baskets.”
“We had a great time visiting with a lady from our church. She loved the basket from Bethany Kids. It was very special being able to have communion with her and my boys. This was their first time participating in communion and they did great; my son even helped me pass out the elements. This was a great experience and a real tangible way for us to pray with and love a neighbor. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to put this together.”
Prayer Team and Prayer Walk
“I was part of the prayer group on campus for Serve The City. It was rewarding to be able to join the others in the group and lift Bethany and the community up in prayer.”
“I had a great time serving and praying for everybody that were in the serve the city projects and Pastor Tim did a great job in prompting and leading us what to pray for, it was a great time had by me as well as the rest of the prayer team. I could feel the presence of our Lord the whole time we were all praying. I hope I can do this again next time. So glad I can join in the serve the city project by praying. God bless you all.”
“It was my privilege to join the Prayer Group held in the Christian Heirs Life Stage classroom led by Pastor Tim. It was a great time of fellowship and prayer as we lifted up the concerns for City Leaders, for Bethany Church leaders, especially since we are searching for a lead pastor, for Bethany School Staff and the Preschool Staff. It was an added blessing to fellowship and have lunch with our group at El Pollo Loco afterwards.”
Local Park, School & Beach Clean Ups
“I had fun picking up trash at Whaley park. It gave me a change to do something for my community and spend more time with my small group friends as well as meet some of the Hendrix’s neighbors. We also had people from Whaley park area come to help. Hopefully connections will be made and we will see fruit on Sundays.”
Long Beach Rescue Mission
“We served lunch at The LBRM. There were 9 people on our team… We prepared and wrapped food for upcoming meals and served the food as people went through the line and then we were served a great lunch. We ate and mingled with the men who live at the mission. The man I spoke to didn’t want to speak at first, but after enjoying our lunch and sharing life stories, we ended up laughing and praying together. It was such a blessing to work together there.”
Ronald McDonald House
“I went to the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) Sunday afternoon with a great group of people to bake goodies for the families there. We first met for lunch and got to meet everyone on the team and plan for our project - that was nice to do. We had a great time working together as a team and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. One of the highlights for me was being able to meet a few folks who were staying there and to hear their stories. They were so appreciative of our service and it was a blessing to spend a little time to hear their stories and to bless them with our baked goods and the gift of listening to them.”
Habitat for Humanity Build Day
“The build day went great! There were so many women represented. Twenty somethings with a running club and even a ninety something year old woman who came with a local church group. I was overjoyed to see how God uses women of all ages and abilities to bless those in need. I was put to work with a group filling trenches, then later on using a table saw to cut fencing. Other women were doing items like installing cabinet handles and painting stair handrails. God used everyone! During water breaks I walked around and looked at the posts in houses that had photos and descriptions of the families that would be moving in. It was great to put a face and name to our blessing. Later on in the day we recognized one of the future homeowners who stopped by the worksite. It was so wonderful to see the smile on her face as she looked at all the progress in the building. I really enjoyed this opportunity and cannot wait to do it again in the future.”
Many thanks to the many people who joined us for this amazing time of service and connection at Bethany Church. We hope next year, you’ll be able to join us as we share God’s love tangibly with our community.
